The Independent Study Program (ISP) offers a unique opportunity for individuals committed to exploring the intersection of art, theory, and curatorial practice. Structured around three core programs—the Studio Program, the Critical Studies Program, and the Curatorial Program—the ISP encourages participants to engage deeply with the theoretical, historical, and social dimensions of artistic production. The program emphasizes collaboration and intellectual discourse, providing a tuition-free, non-degree framework that attracts talented individuals from diverse creative and academic backgrounds.
Each year, the ISP welcomes 25 participants: 15 to the Studio Program, six to the Critical Studies Program, and four to the Curatorial Program. These participants receive significant support, including fellowships funded by the Helena Rubinstein Foundation and relocation stipends for Studio participants, generously provided by the Weitzen family.
Running from September through May, the program combines structured and self-directed activities. Weekly seminars held on Tuesdays and Thursdays provide a platform for discussion and critical engagement, while community events every Friday encourage networking and collaboration. Participants are required to maintain an active presence, contributing to the program’s vibrant and interactive environment.
To further enhance their experience, ISP provides specialized workspaces tailored to the needs of each program. Studio participants have individual spaces for focused creative work, while curators collaborate in a shared workspace to develop and refine projects. Critical Studies participants are given desks in a quiet room, supporting their research, writing, and analysis. This structure ensures that all participants have the resources and environment they need to thrive, while promoting daily interaction and exchange among peers.
