The Balvi Municipality, in cooperation with the Rothko Museum, is proud to invite artists to apply for the “Valdis Bušs 2025” International Painting Plein Air, an extraordinary event that takes place within the museum’s residency program framework. This Plein Air promises to be an exciting opportunity for artists to immerse themselves in a vibrant creative environment while exploring the scenic beauty of Latvia’s eastern region.
The Plein Air event will be held in Viļaka, a town known for its natural charm and cultural depth, located in the eastern part of Latvia. The event honors the legacy of Valdis Bušs, a legendary Latvian landscape artist born near Viļaka, and serves as a tribute to his enduring influence on Latvian art. Additionally, the Plein Air plays an important role in promoting Viļaka as a prime destination for international artist residencies, with a commitment to fostering artistic quality, sustainability, and long-term growth.
This Plein Air offers participants the opportunity to draw inspiration from Viļaka’s beautiful landscapes and cultural landmarks while deepening their understanding of the work of Valdis Bušs. Throughout the event, artists will have the chance to engage with the local community and discover the rich history that shaped Bušs’ artistic vision. Upon concluding the Plein Air, artists will leave their completed works to become part of the Plein Air collection, an evolving archive that will eventually be housed in the Valdis Bušs Art Centre. In the meantime, the collection will be carefully maintained by the Viļaka Museum, ensuring that these valuable works are preserved for the future.
