Balvi Municipality, in collaboration with the Rothko Museum, is excited to invite artists from around the world to participate in the “Valdis Bušs 2025” International Painting Plein Air. This dynamic and immersive creative event is set within the framework of the museum’s residency program, offering an exceptional opportunity for artistic expression in the stunning landscapes of eastern Latvia.
The Plein Air will be held in Viļaka, a charming town with a rich cultural history, located in the scenic eastern part of Latvia. The event not only celebrates the legacy of Valdis Bušs, an iconic Latvian landscape painter born near Viļaka, but also aims to position the town as an internationally recognized hub for artist residencies. With a focus on excellence, professionalism, and sustainable growth, Viļaka is poised to become a prominent location for global creative endeavors.
Artists participating in the Plein Air will have the unique chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of Viļaka’s natural surroundings and cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from its lush landscapes and historical context. In addition, they will gain insight into the life and work of Valdis Bušs, whose artistic legacy continues to inspire new generations. At the conclusion of each Plein Air, artists will contribute their newly created works to the Plein Air collection, a growing repository that will eventually be housed in the future Valdis Bušs Art Centre. Until the centre is established, the collection will be carefully preserved by the Viļaka Museum.
